SICILIAN SALOTTU SESSION #4 | CIURI CIURI
From the Greek and Byzantium hymns to the lute and tambourines introduced by the Arabs, the music of Sicily’s vibrant rhythms heralds from the melodies of its conquistadors. Sicilian instruments and musical styles reverberate sounds from Greek, Roman, Arabic, Normans and Spanish traditions. This fusion of complex cultural influences has imbued Sicilian folk music with a distinct spirit characterised in its lullabies, dance, dance rituals, religious song and songs of resistance. Through song culture moves from one generation to the next.
In Australia, music remains a vibrant expression of our history, ensuring that the essence of Sicily thrives amidst new landscapes.
Join SACA for an afternoon where the past and present harmoniously intertwine and let the evocative sounds of Sicily captivate your soul.
Move to the hypnotic melodies of the marranzanu, the Sicilian jaw harp that evokes the traditional sound of Sicily, and the tamburu performed by percussionist Giovanni Johnny di Stefano, and accompanied by accordionist Jeanette Taranto. Sing Ciuri Ciuri ‘con brio’ led by our Salottu choral master. Bring along an instrument for an open jam session and/or vinyl, CD’s, found in your folks’ collection of Sicilian music.
*Ciuri Ciuri (translates to ‘flowers’), is a traditional Sicilian folk song celebrating the beauty of blooming flowers as a metaphor for love, joy, and the vibrancy of life.
